Kelly Rowland Discusses Backlash She Received For Her Comments During Chris Brown’s “Nice Hair” Controversy

Not so fast, ya’ll! Kelly Rowland is out to clear her name to those who thought she was condoning colorism and discrimination after finding herself in the middle of the recent drama surrounding Chris Brown.

Weeks after the online spectacle surrounding Chris Brown’s controversial song lyric about only wanting black women with “nice hair,” singer Kelly Rowland is finally speaking up about the severe backlash she received from fans when she left a comment on Chris’s Instagram page that many assumed was condoning his comments.

In a new interview with @BuzzFeed, Kelly clarifies that the entire thing was a complete misunderstanding from her perspective because she wasn’t commenting on the hair situation at all, but instead congratulating Chris on his new album.

Kelly explained:

“I think I commented on something about him breaking a hit record or something and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, love you, Chris.’ That was it. And next thing I knew, I came up under all this scrutiny the next day that I’m waking up, and I’m like, ‘Wait, wow.’ They hate me, they hate me. I’m like, ‘OK, I don’t know why.’”

Kelly revealed that she was actually in Australia during the whole controversy, so she didn’t realize just how ill-timed her congratulatory comment was. She also took aim at how quickly backlash spreads.

She stated:

“We’re so quick to crucify each other when we don’t know the backstory of anything, so we also have to be careful of things like that as well.”

Kelly wrapped up things making it clear that she doesn’t agree with certain hair being described as “nice hair,” saying “It’s all good hair. And I don’t think that it should be categorized.”
