Roommates, we are sending our prayers to the loved ones of legendary NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson.
On Monday, the administrator of NASA confirmed that she passed away at the age of 101. Many people may remember that she was depicted in the 2016 film “Hidden Figures.”
She was portrayed by Taraji P. Henson in the film, and the film would go on to earn three Oscar nominations for the 2017 Academy Awards. The film also starred Octavia Spencer as mathematician Dorothy Vaughan and Janelle Monáe as engineer Mary Jackson.
Thanks to the release of the 2016 film “Hidden Figures,” many fans around the world were able to learn about Katherine’s importance to not only math but NASA’s history. She worked at NASA’s predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) in 1953.
Katherine, Dorthy and Mary’s contribution to our history was no longer hidden.
Taraji thanked Katherine in a touching Instagram post. She said, “Thank you QUEEN #KatherineJohnson for sharing your intelligence, poise, grace, and beauty with the world! Because of your hard work, little girls EVERYWHERE can dream as big as the MOON!!! Your legacy will live on FOREVER AND EVER!!! You ran so we could fly!!! I will forever be honored to have been apart of bringing your story to life. You/your story was hidden and thank GOD you are #hiddennomore???? God bless your beautiful family. I am so honored to have sat and broke bread with you all. My thoughts and prayers are with you!”
Roommates, please keep Katherine Johnson’s family lifted in prayer during this difficult time.
