Roommates, Kanye West is well-known for speaking his mind and not holding back on a wide variety of topics—and now he’s continuing to tackle the often criticized operating practices of the music industry. To show just how much he wants out of his restrictive record deals, Kanye urinated on one of his Grammy awards and also offered some insight to what’s really going on in a series of tweets.
Kanye West has 21 Grammy awards to date, so urinating on one of them likely won’t make much of a difference to him. He posted a video reliving himself on the award as a response to his ongoing frustrations with his record contracts.
The video follows a flurry of tweets from earlier this week when he asked his fellow musicians to support him as he attempts to change how the music industry is operated—often at the extreme disadvantage of the artist and only benefiting the record label.
However, Kanye wasn’t done and also posted a lengthy tweet breaking down just how poorly artists are treated by record labels and how little profit they actually receive:
“90% of the record contracts on the planet are still on a royalty A standard record deal is a trap to NEVER have you recoup, and there’s all these hidden costs like the “distribution fees” many labels put in their contracts to make even more money off our work without even trying.”
Kanye also used past example of both Prince and Michael Jackson, as both legendary artists voiced frustration with their record deals throughout their careers.
