John Legend Said He Would Be Open To Going Against Alicia Keys In “Verzuz” Battle

Roommates, the Instagram live “Verzuz” battles have been one of the bright spots during this whole quarantine, as viewers have enjoyed getting an up close and personal look at some of their favorite songs. Now, John Legend has offered up his thoughts on a potential battle—and it involves none other than his musical counterpart, Alicia Keys.

During a recent appearance on Nick Cannon’s morning radio show on L.A.’s Power 106, John Legend gave his fans a lot to hope for when the conversation turned to the Instagram live battles that many of his musical peers have taken part in. Not only did he reveal that he’s open to doing it—but he’s already chosen who he wants to go against…and that would be Alicia Keys.

John told Nick, “I think that would be the best thing. Honestly, if we do it, like a dueling pianos. I think we will.” Nick then stated why he thinks it would be such a good idea to see the two Grammy winners go against each other:

“That would be crazy! I would love to see that. I mean, obviously I’m a huge fan of both of you. Not just your songs and your artistry, but really, your musicianship. I feel like you guys don’t get the opportunity to show that off. Especially for this generation who needs to understand musicality and the importance of theory and putting all of that together for people to be as successful as you and Alicia. We gotta see that.”

John also added his thoughts on the previous battles:

“What I do like with the way it’s been going so far is we’re seeing producers and writers, more than just artists. The producers and writers, what’s so cool about it is, maybe you didn’t know that they produced this song. For me and Alicia, you know it’s our songs ’cause we are the front person for them. We were on the radio singing them, but for all of these producers like Teddy [Riley], Babyface, and all these other producers, ‘Oh, I didn’t know they were behind that song.’”

Meanwhile, the next scheduled Instagram live battle is the first all-female match-up, as Erykah Badu and Jill Scott go head-to-head on May 9th.
