Roommates, Election Day may have come and gone—but even if the election results are far from over, Joe Biden has already made history. As the tally continues to increase, it’s being widely reported that Biden has currently received more popular votes than any other candidate in history…officially surpassing our forever president Barack Obama!
@Newsweek reports, Joe Biden has just broken Barack Obama’s popular vote record set 12 years ago in 2008 when he initially ran for president. Biden has currently received almost 70 million votes (69,512,303 votes or 50.1%) and counting, compared to Donald Trump’s 67,069,982 votes (or 48.3%.) That count is expected to grow even larger for Biden as the popular votes continue to trickle in.
This means that Biden beat Obama’s previous record of 69,498,516 popular votes in 2008. Back then, Obama won 52.93% of the popular vote against the late John McCain—and he received 51.1% four years later against Mitt Romney in 2012 when voters elected him to serve another term. Biden has beat both of those percentages and earned himself a place in the history books.
For a bit of explanation, the popular vote is the total number, or percentage of votes cast by American citizens for a particular candidate, with the person who receives the most votes seizing the popular vote crown. However, getting more votes nationwide does not mean a candidate has won the election.
As an example, in 2016, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by almost 3 million but still lost the race to Donald Trump. She received 48.2% of all votes cast compared to Trump’s 46.1%, however the Electoral College votes went to Trump with a final count of 304 to Clinton’s 227.
