How Did The Beef Begin?
During a sit-down with Esquire to promote his new HBO docuseries, ‘Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show,’ the writer revealed that his 2022 GQ interview sparked their beef. According to Jerrod, Dave didn’t appreciate that he publicly challenged his take on transgender people.
Jerrod felt the 50-year-old’s legacy shouldn’t be based on his criticism of the trans community. Carmichael came out as gay in his April 2022 special ‘Rothaniel.’ Since he is a member of the LGBTQ+ community, fans understand why Carmichael takes particular offense to Dave’s jokes.
However, the producer may have been offended by Chapelle’s response to his stand-up special. Dave called it “the bravest special for 1996.” The comic’s statement implies that the set would have been groundbreaking decades ago, but now it is easier to proclaim one’s sexual identity.
Jerrod disagreed and criticized Dave’s alleged attacks on the LGBTQ community.
The Statements That Allegedly Ruffled Chappelle Feathers
In a GQ sit-down, Jerrod said a popular search engine’s results were mainly Dave Chapelle’s reported vitriol.
“Chappelle, do you know what comes up when you Google your name, bro?” Carmichael asked as he shared his thoughts.
“That’s the legacy? Your legacy is a bunch of opinions on trans s***?” Jerrod continued. He stated it was “an odd hill to die on.”
“Who the f*** are you? Who do you f***? What do you like to do?” the actor stated.
Carmichael admitted he was being cheeky in his commentary about Chappelle but he that Dave’s jokes were “played.” Additionally, he stated if Dave was okay “[dying] on that hill,” then “let him.”
Chappelle Asked For An Apology
Furthermore, Jerrod said the DC native isn’t “revealing anything about himself and he’s removed from what he’s talking about, and I think he’s smarter than that and deeper than that and has more interesting thoughts.”
The North Carolina native told Esquire in April 2024 that Chapelle’s ego was bruised by his critique. “He took it as ‘F*** Dave Chapelle’ because he’s an egomaniac,” he stated.
Jerrod revealed the legendary comedian “wanted me to apologize to him publicly or some s***.”
The producer has yet to do so.
