Roommates, after waiting for what seems like forever, the highly-anticipated Aretha Franklin biopic ‘Respect’ is finally set to hit movie theaters this August. To get fans ready, the official full-length trailer of the film has finally arrived with Jennifer Hudson putting in her bid for another Oscar-winning performance that Aretha would surely be smiling down on.
After multiple release dates that were pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ‘Respect’ starring Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson as the iconic Aretha Franklin is now closer than ever—and by the looks of it, fans will be very happy with the finished product. In the newly released almost three-minute trailer, we see glimpses of Aretha’s journey as a child prodigy, to her struggle to make it in the music industry and finally becoming the legend known to the world as the Queen Of Soul.
During a recent interview, Jennifer spoke about the very long journey to get ‘Respect’ released…and being hand-picked for the role by Aretha herself:
“We originally sat down … right after I won my Oscar for ‘Dreamgirls,’ we met in New York and we had a talk about it. There was no script at the time, but she wanted to meet with me, and we stayed in contact after that. It was when I was on Broadway when she called me and said, ‘I’ve made my decision and it is you, young lady, who I want to play me. But don’t you tell a soul.’ And I was like, ‘Yes ma’am, I won’t!’”
She continued, adding “I just sit back and think about how much of a blueprint that she’s been in my life and in my career. This is something very personal and dear to me. I wanted to make sure I was a part of it as much as I could be, in every way.”
You can finally check out Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin, when ‘Respect’ officially hits theaters on August 13th.
