Last week we told you guys about Jay-Z and the Weinstein Company teaming up for a two-year film and television first look deal.
Now one of the many projects they will be working on has been announced.
According to Deadline, Jay-Z and the Weinstein Company are teaming up for a new Spike TV docu-series called, “TIME: The Kalief Browder Story.” The six-part series is scheduled to premiere in January.
For those who may be unfamiliar with Kalief Browder, he was a 16-year old high school student who was arrested in 2010 for allegedly stealing a backpack. He would go on to serve three years on Rikers Island, with two of those years being in solitary confinement, before being released in 2013.
He had never been tried prior to his release. However, it was his time spent in jail that caused damage to his psyche. He had attempted suicide several times while behind bars. He eventually succeeded in doing so back in 2015.
His story brought attention to the different ways the criminal justice system can abuse the inmates. In his case it was the abusive use of solitary confinement.
Jay-Z said, “Kalief Browder is a modern day prophet; his story a failure of the judicial process. A young man, and I emphasize young man, who lost his life because of a broken system. His tragedy has brought atrocities to light and now we must confront the issues and events that occurred so other young men can have a chance at justice.”
It’s great to see Jay-Z use his position to tell the stories of situations that impact our communities and what really matters.
Roommates what are your thoughts?
