One thing about Jaden Smith, he is always in his philanthropy bag. About two years ago, on his 21st birthday, Jaden launched a food truck initiative called ‘I Love You.’ According to Complex, his goal was to provide free “healthy, vegan food” to people staying in the “Los Angeles’ Skid Row area.” Now, the musician and actor is expanding his initial idea to include a restaurant that feeds the homeless for free.
“Our mission is to spread love to communities experiencing food and/or housing insecurity by offering water along with fresh, high-quality, and delicious sustainable meal options,” said a statement on the restaurant’s official site.
Jaden spoke with Variety about his latest project and gave insight to how he plans to sustain the new business.
“It’s for homeless people to get free food,” Jaden told Variety. “But if you’re not homeless, not only do you have to pay, but you have to pay for more than the food’s worth so that you can pay for the person behind you.”
As previously mentioned, Jaden is no stranger to the world of community service. Back in October, he launched a project called The Water Box. Complex reports that it’s a filtration system used to clean water in order provide access to a necessary resource where it’s most needed. Using the system, Jaden has donated the equivalent of about “300,000 bottles of water” to Flint, Michigan.
As you might know, Flint has been experiencing a severe water crisis over the last few years that’s left 12 people dead and more than 80 ill. In January of this year, several charges were announced against former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder and eight additional government staff members and officials.
As for Jaden, he seems to be a believer in small steps leading to big changes.
“I see this as one, of many, steps towards creating change in our world,” Jaden wrote on his restaurant’s official site.
