Following the enormous success of Straight Outta Compton, there may be another hip hop label biopic in the works.
According to Deadline Hollywood, Universal is considering a film about Def Jam Recordings. Based on Russell Simmons’ Life and Def: Sex, Drugs, Money+ God, the movie will tell the story of the label’s beginning, shining light on Def Jam’s dominance in the 80’s.
It will also touch on hip hop’s transition from a sensation, to the voice of a culture. Universal allegedly has Michael B. Jordan and Jonah Hill in mind to possibly play co-founders Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin respectively.
Although things are not yet set in stone, a Def Jam biopic would fall right in line with the recent hip hop TV shows/films trend (ie. Straight Outta Compton & Fox’s Empire), and has the potential to be a huge success.
