Michael Jordan hits a slam dunk again but this time it was off the court.
Basically back in 2009, a Chicago supermarket thought it was okay to use MJ’s name on an advertisement without his permission and it cost them big time!
Owned by Safeway, Dominick’s (a store that no longer exists) ran an ad with Sports Illustrated where they used Jordan’s lucky number 23 as well as a logo that looked like a knock off Jumpman, which is also Jordan’s trademark.
One of Dominick’s attorneys argued that the former NBA all star should get no more than $126,000 in damages but those numbers were basically an insult to Mike who says he doesn’t do ads worth less than $10 million! Ballin’!!!!!
Anyways Jordan made nice and let them off the hook for $8.9 mil and it looks like the jury appreciated the gesture because they sided with Mike!
Jordan says the case was more about principle than the money, “The case was not about the money, as I plan to donate the proceeds to charity.” He goes on to say, “It was about honesty and integrity. I hope this case sends a clear message, both here in the United States and around the world, that I will continue to be vigilant about protecting my name and identity.”
