The success of the “Fast & Furious” franchise has paved the way for its spinoff film “Hobbs and Shaw,” with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprising their roles as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw.
According to Variety, Idris Elba is in the final negotiations to play the main villain in the film. In the film, Hobbs and Shaw, who are often at odds, will be teaming up. Sources say Elba’s character will be the “antagonist the duo will go up against.”
On Thursday, Johnson took to social media to welcome Elba to the film and said, “For years we’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to work together and this film is the perfect one. Every great hero needs an even greater villain. Cue the music… I’ve been waiting… let’s dance.”
David Letich is on board to direct, with Chris Morgan penning the script, with production to start this fall.
“Hobbs and Shaw” is expected to hit theaters on July 26, 2019.
