When it comes to movies that make you laugh, keep you on the edge of your seat, or just are Black cult classics in general, you can’t have the conversation without mentioning the film ‘House Party.’ The 1990 film that stars the iconic duo Christopher “Kid” Reid, Christopher “Play” Martin, Tisha Campbell-Martin, Martin Lawrence, A.J. Johnson, and others was a huge success in theatres back in the day. Now, LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s video-production company along with other producers are working on rebooting the film according to Deadline!
The film will be produced by Lebron and Maverick’s SpringHill Company, and New Line Cinema, who produced the original film. They are bringing out heavy hitters to make sure the upcoming film is giving what it’s supposed to give. Award-winning music video director Calmatic will be making his movie directorial debut. One of the original people involved in the film, Reginald Hudson, the original director, will be working on the reboot. Reginald will serve as the Executive Producer alongside his brother Warrington Hudlin, Spencer Beighley, and Jamal Henderson from SpringHill. The upcoming film has been written by Emmy-nominated ‘Atlanta’ writing duo Stephen Glover and Jamal Olori.
According to reports, the movie is a big priority for SpringHill as it was a movie that the company’s creators grew up loving and still holds a special place in their hearts. Kid and Play’s shoes will be hard to fill, but the reboot creators have a plan to make sure the best actors execute the roles. Keeping true to the original film’s casting structure, producers are looking to find rising stars to put front and center and help excel their acting careers.
Currently, negotiations for the roles are in the process for actors Jorge Lendeborg Jr. and Tosin Cole. You may be familiar with Jorge if you’re a Spider-Man fan. He is known for appearing in ‘Bumblebee, Spider-Man: Homecoming’ and ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home.’ As far as Tosin, the actor was in the ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Doctor Who’ movie.
As a fan of the film, I will be watching to see if Jorge and Tosin can bring true chemistry, rap skills, and comedic relief to their roles and see if they can embody Kid and Play. As of now, there is no release date for the film.
Roomies, do yall think this reboot should happen, or should it be left alone?
