Roomies, up until January 2016, women weren’t allowed to serve in US combat roles but now two women are changing the game.
CNN reports that one of the women will train with other potential officers this summer, with hopes of becoming the first female Navy SEAL. Another woman will undergo training for the Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewman, which is also known as the SWCC.
Lt. Cmdr. Mark Walton, a spokesman for Naval Special Warfare Command, told CNN that the women’s identities are being kept confidential to protect their “career viability as future special operators, as well as their personal security.
These two candidates are the first two female candidates to make history 18 months following the new rules, which allow women to qualify for these roles.
Both the SEALS and SWCC place their applicants under physical and mental training for the duration of two months in Illinois. Candidates must pass a physical test following the first stage or face the possibility of termination.
