Halle Bailey isn’t letting up on her acting career! After her main character on A.B.C.’s Grown-ish, she locked in her Disney ties with the lead role in the live-action version of the upcoming The Little Mermaid. Then, the singer secured another major win when she joined talents like Taraji P. Henson and H.E.R. as a castmate in The Color Purple movie musical. On Thursday, Halle took to social media to celebrate the end of filming her role as Nettie.
“and that’s a wrap for me on The Color Purple,” Halle wrote on Instagram. “I’m so very grateful to have had this experience. My second major motion picture complete in the last year and a half. God is so good. Here’s a few of my fav moments without showing too much.”
Halle’s post included photos of herself on set and a short video of TCP producer Oprah Winfrey offering her a bouquet. In the video, the surrounding cast and crew clap it up as Halle shows all her pearly whites in response! In one photo, she leaned into Oprah as the two posed with the white floral bouquet.
On Twitter, Halle revealed she wrapped her final filming at 3 a.m.
News of the film adaptation of The Color Purple musical came in 2018. The original 1985 film and 2005 musical were adopted from a 1982 book written by Alice Walker. You may recall Oprah played the role of Sofia in the 1985 film.
This storyline has received plenty of love–11 Tony Award nominations in 2006 aside–the musical show ran for a reported 910 performances until 2008. Then in 2015, the play was revived on Broadway. That time it secured a Tony in 2016 for Best Revival of a Musical.
While Halle tackled the role of Nettie, singer Fantasia Barrino will portray her older sister and main character Celie. Taraji plays Shug Avery. Danielle Brooks assumed Oprah’s former role as Sophia. H.E.R. brought her talents to Squeak. Ciara joined as Nettie, and Aunjanue Ellis, from King Richard, plays Mama.
The movie musical hits theaters on December 20, 2023, per Entertainment Weekly.
