Roommates we are keeping the country of Haiti lifted in prayer following the news that their President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated at his home early Wednesday in Port-au-Prince.
According to CNN, Prime Minister Claude Joseph announced the news and said that Moïse was attacked at his home around 1 a.m. by a group of unidentified individuals. It was also reported that the First Lady Martine Marie Etienne Joseph, was shot and is receiving treatment.
Prime Minister Claude Joseph continued to state, “The security situation in the country is under the control of the Haitian National Police and the Haitian Armed Forces. All measures are being taken to guarantee the continuity of the State and to protect the Nation.”
The Associated Press reports that the Prime Minister also referred to the attack on the president and first lady as a “hateful, inhumane and barbaric act.” It was noted that the attackers reportedly spoke in Spanish, however, no further details were provided.
President Joe Biden spoke out about Moïse’s assassination and said, “We are shocked and saddened to hear of the horrific assassination of President Jovenel Moïse and the attack on First Lady Martine Moïse of Haiti. We condemn this heinous act, and I am sending my sincere wishes for First Lady Moïse’s recovery. The United States offers condolences to the people of Haiti, and we stand ready to assist as we continue to work for a safe and secure Haiti.”
