Roommates, less than 24 hours after she showed her support at the Republican National Convention, former inmate Alice Johnson has been granted an official pardon by Trump. He officially signed the papers in the White House and spoke briefly about his decision, describing her as “fine people.”
With the full pardon, it now means that Alice Johnson’s previous criminal offense has been forgiven—and although the offense stays on her criminal record, she is not subject to any further restrictions or criminal penalties that other convicts or ex-convicts may be subject to.
As you may remember, back in 2018 Trump granted Alice Johnson, a first-time nonviolent drug offender, a commutation of her sentence — a week after Kim Kardashian pleaded for her release during a meeting with Trump at the White House.
Speaking about Johnson, Trump had this to say:
“We’re giving Alice a full pardon. I just told her. That means you can do whatever you want in life. Just keep doing the great job you’re doing. Alice has done an incredible job since she’s been out, and recommending other people” to grant clemency.”
Alice Johnson told media outlets after she received the news of her pardon from Trump, that she had “no idea” she was going to be granted a pardon. “I had idea. None. It’s almost like déjà vu from two years ago. When I woke up that morning I didn’t know that would be my last day in prison,” she said.
