I would say “almost doesn’t count,” but the people who wanted to throw their hard earned cash at the construction of Trump’s proposed #BorderWall were millions of dollars off their goal, so almost doesn’t even come close.
The #GoFundMe campaign dedicated to Americans funding the wall has been shut down after funders failed to reach the $1 billion goal set. That’s a fifth of what Trump says the wall will actually cost.
GoFundMe Spokesman Bobby Withorne told @businessinsider that the campaign’s founder, #BrianKolfage, initially promised donors that all donations would be used to pay for a wall along the US-Mexico border. “However, that did not happen,” Whithorne said. “This means all donors will receive a refund.”
But apparently that isn’t stopping Kolfage, who has now created a nonprofit Florida Corporation named “We Build the Wall, Inc.” and he’s asking donors to redirect their money there “if they still wished for their money to be used, in one way or another, to build a wall.”
Kolfage claims he’s done the research and talked to several experts in “law, politics, national security, construction, and finance” to learn about what goes into the construction of this wall.
“Unanimously,” Kolfage said, “we have all come to the conclusion that the federal government won’t be able to accept our donations anytime soon.”
He said that’s why his new nonprofit will accept any donations previously made to the GoFundMe campaign.
Whithorne said that if a person who donated to the original GoFundMe campaign did not want a refund and instead wanted the money to go to Kolfage’s new organization, “they must proactively elect to redirect their donation to that organization,” adding that “if they do not take that step, they will automatically receive a full refund.”
