#Roommates, following the announcement that their daughter Zaya has officially come out as transgender, Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade have been responding to the support and feedback from fans that has been pouring in. Gabrielle posted a few messages of thanks to those who’ve showed compassion and understanding.
As we previously reported, Dwyane Wade made an appearance on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” where he talked about his 12-year-old child coming out to him and wife Gabrielle Union. He recalled the moment when Zaya made the decision to go by that name and to be referred to by she/her pronouns.
He stated, “So once Zaya, our 12-year-old, came home and said, ‘Hey, I want to talk to you guys. I think going forward I’m ready to live my truth. I want to be referenced as she and her, I would love for you guys to call me Zaya.’”
Fast forward to the present, and Gabrielle Union recently posted a few messages on Twitter to respond to the outpouring of support from fans following the announcement and to acknowledge that she’s still in the learning process:
“This has been a journey. We’re still humbly learning but we decided quickly w/ our family that we wouldn’t be led by fear. We refuse to sacrifice the freedom to live authentically becuz we are afraid of what ppl might say. U have the ability to learn & evolve. Try that s**t”
Gabrielle continued, adding:
“Also the tremendous support we’ve received is amazing & hopefully inspires more folks to center, support, love & protect the most marginalized of us.”
Zaire Wade also recently posted a sweet message of his own for Zaya on Instagram.
Roommates, what are your thoughts on this?
