Gabrielle Union recently opened up about her 30-year struggle with anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, as she encouraged suffering with the disorders to support and love one another.
In an Instagram post on Wednesday, the ‘Being Mary Jane’ actress explained that she’s been battling with mental health issues since she was sexually assaulted at the age of 19. Union detailed how her day-to-day activities have been impacted all of these years.
As a rape survivor, I have battled PTSD for 30 years. Living with anxiety and panic attacks all these years has never been easy. There’s times the anxiety is so bad it shrinks my life. Leaving the house or make a left hand turn at an uncontrolled light can fill me with terror.”
Gabrielle continued, explaining that even the most exciting parts of her life have turned grey as a result of her anxiety. She shared a video of herself standing on the red carpet at the 2022 Met Gala in a beautiful white gown alongside her husband, Dwyane Wade.
Anxiety can turn my anticipation about a party or fun event I’ve been excited about attending (Met Ball) into pure agony. When we tell y’all what we are experiencing, please believe us the 1st time we mention it. No, it’s not just like being nervous and everyone experiences and deals with anxiety differently and that’s OK.”
Gabrielle Union previously spoke about her experience with PTSD, and detailed being raped at gunpoint. During a social media campaign in 2018, Union stated that it was her responsibility to tell her story of sexual assault and help other women stand up for themselves.
“You can literally be anything you want to be. PTSD isn’t a death sentence.”
