Roommates, according to the National Football League (NFL), legendary coach and broadcaster John Madden passed away on Tuesday morning. He was 85 years old. At this time, there’s limited details on what exactly happened. However, the NFL released a touching statement honoring John following the news.
“On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Virginia, Mike, Joe and their families. We all know him as the Hall of Fame coach of the Oakland Raiders and broadcaster who worked for every major network, but more than anything, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather,” NFL Commissioner said. “Nobody loved football more than Coach. He was football. He was an incredible sounding board to me and so many others. There will never be another John Madden, and we will forever be indebted to him for all he did to make football and the NFL what it is today.”
As you may know, John coached the Oakland Raiders for 10 seasons and led them to a Super Bowl win in 1976. He retired as a coach at age 42. John left the field as one of the best NFL coaches of all time with a 0.759 winning percentage, per AP News.
And once coaching was in the rearview mirror, John found another field to dominate: broadcasting. He provided entertainment to millions of sports viewers with his sound effects and personality as an analyst. Between 1979 and 2009 John covered 11 Super Bowl games. Within 30 years, John won 16 Emmy Awards for outstanding sports analyst/personality.
Later, John began representing the video game franchise ‘Madden NFL: Football,’ which was named in his honor.
John Madden’s death quickly went viral on Twitter, as longtime fans shared his accomplishments. One of his most famed quotes made its rounds a few times. The beloved coach shared the words when he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
“People always ask, are you a coach or a broadcaster or a video game guy?” Coach John Madden said. “I’m a coach, always been a coach.”
