Former NBA player Brandon Roy was reportedly shot in the leg over the weekend while attending an outside gathering.
According to King 5 TV, Roy the gathering in Los Angeles, CA; he was an innocent bystander when the shots began to ring out. The shooting is reportedly being described as gang related.
He received treatment in southern California before returning to Washington.
A source revealed to USA Today Sports that he was shielding children from the gunfire that had erupted.
TMZ Sports reported that two additional people were shot, but there were no life-threatening injuries. Police are looking for the person responsible for the shooting.
On Wednesday, Roy’s former team, the Portland Trailblazers said in a statement, “Like many others, we’re just learning of the injury suffered by former Trail Blazers player Brandon Roy in a shooting over the weekend in California. According to those reports, Brandon was wounded as a bystander but is expected to recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with Brandon and his family during this time.”
Roy played for both the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Portland Trailblazers; he currently serves as the coach for Nathan Hale High School’s boy’s basketball team.
