Kevin Troy Williamson is behind bars after he was arrested on Friday for attacking a Black woman Rayme McCoy. Kevin was caught on a viral video calling Rayme racial slurs and striking her several times after she asked him to back up inside a Jacksonville,FL gas station last week.
Rayme spoke with News 4 Jax explaining she walked into the BP near her home and was followed by Kevin. He was already involved in an argument with someone outside the gas station. Raymen said the man was “ranting and raving” and using racist language at one point. Things escalated when he walked toward the counter where she was standing. Once she asked him to back up, that’s when she claimed he told her he had a gun in his car.
“So at that point, I felt threatened,” Rayme said. “He put his beers on the counter in front of my stuff and I slid them over and at that point, that’s when he started punching me in the face.”
News 4 Jax reports Kevin appeared in court today, where he was charged with misdemeanor battery. His bond was set at $20,000 on the condition that he does not return to the BP Gas Station where the incident occured. In addition, he must not have any contact with the victim or witnesses.
The State Attorney’s Office apologized for Kevin’s delayed arrest. Attorney Randy Reep, who is not affiliated with the case, said, ”
Sometimes in the law, I can do it quick, or I can do it right. But sometimes I can’t do both.” He added, “I’m not apologizing for the four days it takes, but I would tell you, that’s not outrageous in my experience.” At this time, Kevin isn’t being charged with a hate crime. However, it’s up to the State Attorney to make that decision. Attorney Reep said they’d interview witnesses, and in two to three weeks, the State Attorney will decide on the final charges.
