It looks like “The Color Purple” is making its way to the big screen once again. This time around it is the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical that is being adapted into a film.
According to Deadline, Steven Spielberg, the director of the 1985 film will serve as one of the producers. Quincy Jones, who composed the music for the original film will also serve as a producer. Oprah Winfrey who starred as Sofia in the original film is also on board as one of the producers, along with Scott Sanders.
Both the original film and musical are based on Alice Walker’s 1982 book about Celie, “a black Southern woman who struggles to find her identity after suffering abuse from her father, husband and others over the course of four decades.”
Winfrey, Jones, and Sanders produced the Broadway musical, which debuted back in 2005. The production earned a total of 11 Tony Award nominations in 2006, and LaChanze won for Best Actress in a Musical. The show ran for 910 performances before closing in February of 2008.
The musical was revived on Broadway in 2015 and won a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical in 2016 before closing in January of 2017. Jennifer Hudson starred in the revival as Shug Avery, Danielle Brooks starred as Sofia. Cynthia Erivo, who starred as Celie during the London production, reprised her role on Broadway.
According to the site, the project is currently looking for a writer.
