A community organizer in Minnesota recently started a petition urging the local government to get rid of a statue of Christopher Columbus and have it replaced with legendary singer Prince.
According to The Fader, the recent removal of Confederate monuments throughout the country sparked the idea to remove this statue of Christopher Columbus.
When it comes to why this action is important, the petition states, “Prince represents Minnesota values and Columbus does not.”
Under the petition’s description it states, “Across the nation, city governments are choosing to remove statues of white supremacists, slave owners, and those who threatened the livelihood of Black people.”
It continues, “Here in Minnesota, communities are reigniting the demand to bring down state’s monument to Christopher Columbus, a man who murdered, raped and enslaved Black and Native peoples in the Americas.”
Prince was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota back in 1958 and passed in Chanhassen, Minnesota last year, has become a hometown hero for many.
The petition has a goal of 5,000 signatures. As of Tuesday, there have been a little over 4,000 signatures.
