How would you feel if you were an up and coming artist and learned that a bigger, more pronounced artist used your concept? As was the case for a rapper named Blank Face who believes that Schoolboy Q bit his style and used it in his new song called Groovy Tony. Blank Face’s manager, who’s name just happens to be Tony, spoke to Above Average Hip Hop and explained that they introduced the concept to some music execs and thought it was super odd that Schoolboy chose to repeat Blank Face over and over again in the song.
He said:
“We developed the concept BlankFace 3 years ago. Two years ago we introduced the concept of BlankFace to a few execs (can’t give any names), and a few days ago the song Groovy Tony came out. I automatically saw similarities from the first words he spoke. The first words that came out of his mouth were “BlankFace.” His rap style sounds changed from what he usually does. It’s MORE demonic and blasphemous which sounds very similar to my artist’s style. Then today I got in touch with the guy who shot the video. He told me the video was shot last year which is perfect timing because we introduced the BlankFace concept about a year and a half to 2 years ago. He calls himself the no face Killah and his first original name was BlankFace Killah [sic].”
Schoolboy Q responded to an Instagram comment that Tony made and totally denied that he stole anyone’s idea:
We don’t know, Roommates, that is kinda strange. Sometimes you an’t blame the artists for things like this, rather the people behind the scenes! Do you think they stole Blank Face’s ideas? Let’s chat!
