Derek Chauvin’s Sentencing Opened With A Heartfelt Message From George Floyd’s Daughter Gianna Floyd—“I Ask About Him All The Time”

Roommates, as people across the country tuned in to watch the sentencing hearing of convicted murderer Derek Chauvin, George Floyd’s legal team opened the proceedings with a virtual appearance by his youngest daughter, Gianna Floyd. Before opening statements and the eventual sentencing, those present in court heard the heartfelt remarks by 7-year-old Gianna Floyd in reference to her father, who was killed by Derek Chauvin.

Little Gianna Floyd spoke briefly about the memory of her father with the following heartbreaking comments:

“I want to play with him, have fun. Go on a plane ride. And that’s it. We used to have dinner meals every single night before we went to bed. My daddy always used to help me brush my teeth…Well, they help him because of those mean people did something to him.”

Gianna wasn’t the only family member to speak out in court, as Derek Chauvin’s mother Carolyn Pawlenty also spoke directly to the court and praised her son as “a good man”:

“My son’s identity has also been reduced to that of a racist. I want this court to know that none of these things are true and that my son is a good man. [The public] will never know the loving and caring man he is. I have always believed in [Derek’s] innocence and I’ll never waver from that. When you sentence him, you will also be sentencing me. I won’t be able to see him or give him our special hug. When he is released, his father and I most likely won’t be here.”

As we previously reported, former Minneapolis police officer and convicted murderer Derek Chauvin was officially sentenced to 22 ½  years in prison after previously being found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. He will also receive credit for time already served.
