#Roommates, day four of Derek Chauvin’s murder trial, for his role in the death of George Floyd, featured some very interesting testimony that definitely won’t make Chauvin’s attorneys happy. Retired former Sergeant David Ploeger, who was Derek Chauvin’s supervisor, testified that Chauvin’s excessive force against George Floyd should have stopped well before his death.
@CBSNews reports, as the testimony continued in the fourth day of the Derek Chauvin trial, multiple witnesses gave their take on George Floyd’s death as a result of Chauvin’s knee on his neck for over eight minutes after he was already restrained. However, the most crucial testimony of the day came from Chauvin’s former supervisor, David Ploeger.
As the questioning continued on the witness stand, Ploeger offered a very crucial response, which was a definite blow to Derek Chauvin’s defense team. “When Mr. Floyd was no longer offering up any resistance to officers, they could have ended their restraint,” Ploeger said. Pressing further, prosecutor Steve Schleicher asked whether that meant when George Floyd was in handcuffs, on the ground and no longer resisting and Ploeger replied, “Correct.”
Additionally, Ploeger stated that Minneapolis police officers are trained regarding the dangers of “positional asphyxia”—which is a breathing complication that can occur when someone is restrained in the prone position. He said that instead, officers are trained to place restrained individuals in the “side recovery position” as quickly as possible so as not to restrict their breathing.
After the recording between Ploeger and Chauvin ended regarding Floyd, Ploeger stated what Chauvin told him. “I believe he told me they’d tried to put Mr. Floyd… in the car, he’d become combative.”
Ploeger explained that Derek Chauvin said George Floyd had a bloody lip after struggling with him and suffered a medical emergency. Although, Ploeger revealed that during their conversation Chauvin neglected to mention that he applied any force to Floyd, specifically the fatal knee to his neck.
