Roommates, we are sending our condolences to the family of David Dinkins, who served as the first and, to date, the only Black Mayor of New York City.
According to ABC News, the New York City Police Department confirmed that he passed away on Monday after officers were called to his home in the evening. There were reportedly initial indications that he passed away due to natural causes. His passing comes a few weeks after his wife’s passing. She passed last month at the age of 89.
Dinkins served as New York City’s 106th mayor and was in office from 1990 to 1993. New York City’s current mayor Bill de Blasio, who also worked in Dinkins’ administration spoke about his legacy and said, “What a good man with a good heart who really just wanted to help people.”
de Blasio also met his wife, Chirlane McCray, while working for Dinkins and said he used to tell him, “All I owe you is my marriage, my family, you know, my career, nothing else than that.”
New York Attorney General Letitia James, who has also made history herself as New York’s first Black woman elected to statewide office, also spoke about Dinkins and said, “The example Mayor David Dinkins set for all of us shines brighter than the most powerful lighthouse imaginable I was honored to have him hold the bible at my inaugurations because I, and others, stand on his shoulders.”
