Tensions continue to remain high in Minnesota with the ongoing trial for Derek Chauvin following the 2020 murder of George Floyd, and now most recently due to the killing of Daunte Wright.
On Tuesday, the families for both Floyd and Wright held a press conference alongside Ben Crump, and during the press conference, Daunte Wright’s aunt, Naisha Wright, revealed that there was a connection between both George and Daunte.
She said, “The craziest thing is to find out today that my family has connections to this man, to this family. His girlfriend was a teacher for my nephew. My nephew was a lovable young man. His smile, oh lord, the most beautiful smile. Ya’ll took that.”

As previously reported, Daunte was unfortunately killed by Officer Kim Potter in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. She has since resigned and has been charged for the killing. It was reported that she “accidentally” grabbed her gun and fatally shot him. The police chief claimed that she intended to her grab her taser.
The killing of Daunte led to protests erupting in the area as many people continue to demand that justice is served.
According to the Washington Post, George Floyd’s girlfriend Courteney Ross confirmed the connection and said that Daunte attended Edison High School while she was a dean. She said, that he was a “silly boy, as goofy as can be,” who required extra attention because he “needed a lot of love.”
Courtney said that she remembers last seeing Daunte in the summer of 2019 while she was walking with Geroge Floyd. She said that Daunte was being confronted by police on the corner in Brooklyn Center.
“Students like Daunte needed more resources but they never got more resources,” she said. “Our system doesn’t serve kids like Daunte. And now I’m seeing, more than ever, this system I once believed in, we’re done doing what we need to be doing to protect Black life.”
