Roommates, 20 years ago today, R&B legend D’Angelo dropped his second album “Voodoo” on us…and it fulfilled every expectation and definitely didn’t disappoint fans.
Led by the extremely popular and extremely sexy single (and video that had all the ladies ready to risk it all) “Untitled (How Does It Feel”) —-which is also one of the most iconic videos ever by a male R&B artist, D’Angelo was completely in his bag.
“Voodoo” was the follow-up to D’Angelo’s 1995 multi-platinum debut album “Brown Sugar” and many of his fans consider it the album that defined his career. As soon the album was released on January 25, 2000, it quickly landed on every music critic’s favorites list and hailed as one of the best albums of the year, even though it dropped at the very start of it.
The singles from D’Angelo’s “Voodoo” included “Devil’s Pie,” (which was previously heard in the 1998 film “Belly”) “Left & Right” (featuring Redman and Method Man,) the smooth ballad “Send It On” and the album’s biggest hit and iconic video, “Untitled (How Does It Feel.) We don’t even have to get into why the video was so iconic because we all remember D’Angelo all oiled up and looking like a complete snack all throughout.
By the time the 2001 Grammys came around, D’Angelo was nominated for several awards and won the Grammy for Best R&B Album, Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song, both for “Untitled (How Does It Feel.) “Voodoo” has been named as one of the greatest R&B albums of all-time and one of the standouts of the neo-soul era.
The entire album is a classic, but on its 20th anniversary, we wanna know what tracks were your faves? What are your memories of the album? Did you need a time out after watching the “Untitled” video?
Roommates, what are your thoughts on this?
