Last fall, the chilling story of #CyntoiaBrown went viral after a documentary called ‘Me Facing Life: Cyntoia’s Story’ resurfaced. It documented how Brown was arrested and tried as an adult for murder at just 16 years old for shooting and killing the man who used her as a sex slave. Cyntoia received a 60-year sentence and isn’t eligible for parole until 51 years have been served.
This case is a perfect example of a gross miscarriage of justice especially since Cyntoia was a child! Many celebs such as #SnoopDogg, #TI and #KimKardashian spoke out about the case publicly. Kim actually volunteered to have her lawyer look into the case to see if there was any way to get justice.
Last week, it was announced that Brown was granted a clemency hearing for her case on May 23rd which means she could be set free! According to the @TheTennessean, Brown’s petition will be heard in front of the state Board of Probation and Parole, who will then determine whether or not she will be released from the Tennessee Prison for Women.
“It is up to the governor to decide the process after we make our recommendation,” Melissa McDonald, a spokeswoman for the state Board of Probation and Parole said. “The governor may act on it or choose not to act.”
Brown’s attorney Jeremy Faison has been advocating for her release for some time now by appealing to Governor Bill Haslam for a pardon. It is his last year in office and Brown’s supporters are hoping and praying that he will grant her a pardon in his way out of office. Still, Faison believes that the odds of his client being released are good.
“I would like to tell you that I think the odds are good,” Faison said. However, he acknowledges that “it is hard to get government to admit they are wrong.”
That last part… Anyway, good luck, Cyntoia!! We are praying for you!
