While Minneapolis is taking to protests and riots seeking #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd, Colin Kaepernick has launched an initiative to help the protestors pay legal fees.
The initiative allows protestors who face charges will be provided with financial resources and access to top lawyers.
According to the official website, the “Know Your Rights Camp Legal Initiative” is an extension of his nonprofit organization–Colin Kaepernick Foundation whose primary focus is fighting oppression through education.
The former NFL quarterback had this to say about the initiative, “In fighting for liberation there‘s always retaliation. We must protect our Freedom Fighters. We started a legal defense initiative to give legal representation to Freedom Fighters in Minneapolis paid for by @yourrightscamp For representation or to donate,” followed by a link to the website to the initiative.
As we reported, Derek Chauvin, the ex-Minneapolis Police Officer who had his knee in Floyd’s neck was just arrested. He has been charged with third-degree murder. Many people are still calling for the arrests of the other three officers who were involved. As of now, they have only been fired.
The city of Minneapolis has been in an uproar, since Tuesday, as they demand justice for Gregory Floyd, a Black man that was arrested on Monday by ex-officer Derek Chauvin and three other acting officers, as previously reported.
While handcuffed, Chauvin had his knee in Floyd’s neck. Ignoring pleas from Floyd that he couldn’t breathe, he later died.
Looters have taken over stores, including Target and Dollar Tree. Three precincts were also burned, as people demanded the officers to be arrested. Across the country, cities like Los Angeles, Atlanta, Pensacola, and Memphis have also joined in the fight, demanding that George Floyd gets justice.
