Last week, R&B singer #ChrisetteMichele received a ton of backlash over her decision to perform at the Inaugural Ball for Donald Trump last Friday. A bulk of the comments were downright cruel, yet the singer did not let it consume her. Instead, she released a statement explaining that she was willing to be a voice for the voiceless and a bridge over the troubled water that is the United States–even if it meant that her decision to do so wouldn’t be well-received.
To make her point more concrete, Chrisette released a spoken word poem this afternoon titled “No Political Genius” in which she addresses criticism from Questlove and Spike Lee’s very public decision to remove her music from his upcoming Netflix series. The description for the track states that Chrisette “invites listeners to stop bickering and start listening to each others point of view.”
The lyrics to #NoPoliticalGenius read:
“Your hateful words won’t be my defining moment/ They will be my ammunition to fight the system/ We will win them/Hope is alive/ This is my standing/ For John Lewis and Ben Carson/ Questlove, Spike Lee, and before them/I won’t divide now/ That’s not smart now/ God before me, I won’t back down/ This is my d*mn America now.”
