Carolina Panthers quarterback, #CamNewton recently spoke with “: GQ where he dismissed the idea that the criticism he receives, on and off the field, is a product of racism. “Everybody’s entitled to their own opinion,” he said. “I don’t want this to be about race, because it’s not. It’s not. Like, we’re beyond that. As a nation.”
Interestingly enough, just before Super Bowl 50, the football player described himself as “an African-American quarterback that may scare a lot of people because they haven’t seen nothing they can compare me to,” so obviously he acknowledges that him being black and great may intimidate people.
Newton went on to explain how unnecessary labels are in the world of football, because there are more important things to be focused on. “I don’t even want to touch the topic of black quarterback, because I think this game is bigger than black, white or green,” he said before the game. “I think we limit ourselves when we just label ourselves just black, this, that and the third. I wanted to bring awareness because of that, but yet I don’t think I should be labeled just a black quarterback, because it’s bigger things in this sport that need to be accomplished.”
Well social media had a lot to say about Cam Newton’s views and we can’t say many agree
