#Roommates, if you’re a California resident you better use the next 15 years to buy a new gas-powered car while you can. California Governor Gavin Newsom recently confirmed that the state has plans to officially ban the sale of all new gas-powered vehicles by the year 2035.
According to @NYTimes, California Governor Gavin Newsom is cracking down on the state’s increasing plans to combat global warming by officially banning the sale of new gasoline-powered cars statewide by 2035. The decision comes on the heels of the state dealing with a fatal and record-breaking wildfire season. The plan would affect only new-vehicle sales, the governor’s office said. It would also not prevent Californians from owning cars with internal combustion engines past 2035 or selling them on the used-vehicle market.
In his executive order, Governor Newsom instructed California’s regulators to develop a plan that would require automakers to sell more vehicles that emit zero emissions, such as battery-powered or hydrogen-powered cars and pickup trucks, until those vehicles make up 100 percent of new auto sales in the state in the next 15 years. “This is the next big global industry. And California wants to dominate it,” Governor Newsom said at a news conference earlier this week.
The plan would also set a goal for all heavy-duty trucks on the road in California to be zero emissions by 2045 where possible. The order directs the state’s transportation agencies to look for near-term actions to reduce Californian’s reliance on driving by expanding access to mass transit and biking.
However, California has an uphill battle ahead, as last year only 8% of the nearly two million passenger vehicles sold statewide were battery-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles.
