Roommates, 30 years ago today, Boyz II Men, the biggest-selling R&B group of all-time, released their debut album ‘Cooleyhighharmony’ and instantly became one of the greatest groups in history. The album represented a shift in R&B groups and Boyz II Men set the stage for what would be a history-making run throughout the 1990s.
‘Cooleyhighharmony’ brought together Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris, Shawn Stockman and Michael McCary for their debut album that was not only filled with hits—but also showed off the group’s unmatched vocal ability highlighted by 4-part harmony.
The album sold a jaw-dropping 9 million copies, was nominated for two Grammy awards, winning the Grammy award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group, and also earned a collection of American Music Awards. ‘Cooleyhighharmony’s’ first single was the upbeat dance track ‘Motownphilly,’bfollowed by the beautifully sung, somber tune ‘It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday.’ The album’s final two singles were the sexy ‘Uhh Ahh,’ which saw Boyz II Men have fun shedding their good guy image just a little bit, and the smooth heartbreak anthem, “Please Don’t Go.”
Over on social media, Boyz II Men acknowledged the 30th anniversary of their debut album with a touching message. “Today is a special day. How do you encapsulate 30 years? Just some kids from Philly. Love to you all for sticking with us this long. We can’t wait to get back out there to you,” the post read.
We know we are still playing this album like it just dropped, congrats on 30 years!
