#Roommates, there’s no better time than the beginning of the year to trade in your old car for something new, sleek and innovative—and luxury automaker BMW could possibly have just what you need to turn heads when you pull up. BMW recently revealed its brand new concept vehicle called the iX Flow SUV, that can literally change colors to suit your mood by simply pressing a button.
As one of the leaders in the luxury car market, BMW continues to find new ways to combine car design with technology. @CNN reports, BMW unveiled its latest concept vehicle, the iX Flow, which is an SUV that can quickly (and easily) change colors…including its wheels! The vehicle’s shades go from white to gray or black and back again in mere seconds. The color-changing effect is created by using specially formed wrapping that is cut to fit the body panels on the SUV. Additionally, the technology-savvy wrapping features the same type of electronic ink technology that’s used in electronic readers. From there, colored panels are cut to match the shape of the iX Flow’s body panels and then electric wiring is finally attached to each section.
Even more interesting, is that the entire surface of the panel contains millions of tiny capsules with negative white pigments and positive black pigments that utilize electric currents to bring one pigment or the other to the surface to create the varying shades. There is also no worry about needing to continuously charge it to retain the color change because the panels keep their color without needing to do so. Once the color change is completed, the panels keep their tone without needing any more electrical charge.
BMW Head of Design, Adrian van Hooydonk, explained the idea behind the concept vehicle, which is not currently in production for purchase, as an “advanced research and design project.”
However, Stella Clarke, the project leader for the iX Flow, spoke about why potential customers may want to try the SUV out. “This gives the driver the ability to express different facets of their personality or even their enjoyment of change outwardly, and to redefine this each time they sit in their car.”
