You can always count on Black Twitter to get their point across when it comes to making a statement, and Tuesday was no different as they went in and stuck up for “Living Single.”
In a new interview with The Guardian, David Schwimmer, who starred as Ross on the hit sitcom “Friends,” talked about the success of the show and how the impact of the show has aged over the years. During the interview, it was mentioned that the show was a part of the pre-“woke” era when it comes to the topic of race.
David responded and said that he had always pushed for more diversity back in the day. He said, “Maybe there should be an all-black Friends or an all-Asian Friends. But I was well aware of the lack of diversity and I campaigned for years to have Ross date women of color. One of the first girlfriends I had on the show was an Asian American woman, and later I dated African American women. That was a very conscious push on my part.”
Now ya’ll know Twitter pulled out the receipts to remind David that “Friends” was actually an all-white version of “Living Single,” which was an all-black cast. Basically reminding him that the concept already existed before “Friends” came along in 1994.
One of the many people to remind David was Erika Alexander, who starred as Maxine Shaw on “Living Single.” She took to Twitter and said, “Hey @DavidSchwimmer @FriendsTV – r u seriously telling me you’ve never heard of #LivingSingle? We invented the template! Yr welcome bro.”
