Atlanta’s I-85 Is Scheduled To Reopen Next Week

Back in March the I-85 collapsed in Atlanta due to a large fire that broke out below the underpass where construction supplies were stored.

After several weeks, the officials in Georgia announced they would be ready to reopen Interstate 85 on May 15th.

According to NPR, on Wednesday it was announced that both the southbound and northbound lanes on the I-85 bridge over the Piedmont Road will be open in time for Monday’s morning rush hour commute.

The decision to reopen the major roadway comes five weeks ahead of schedule, but just in time for those who will be commuting during Memorial Weekend.

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation work crews replaced “13 columns and 61 beams and logged some 85,000 hours.”

Officials say that the fire that caused the interstate to collapse back in March was caused “maliciously,” and an arrest was made. Thankfully no one was harmed during the incident.
