#Roommates, if you’ve been keeping up on social media, you’re likely aware that R&B singer Ari Lennox has been in the middle of an in-depth Twitter war following comments about her appearance. It all started when a Twitter user compared Ari and Teyana Taylor’s physical appearance to Rottweilers—and Ari recently posted a tearful video to address the insults.
Just as 2020 was officially making its presence known, some people decided to usher in the new year without positivity—and instead comment negatively about others looks. The victim in this case happened to be Ari Lennox when a Twitter user posted, “Ari Lennox and Teyana Taylor’s ability to have dangerously high sex appeal while simultaneously looking like Rottweilers will always amaze me.” Ari initially simply responded with, “People hate blackness so bad”—but things got even more intense after that.
After posting a few more tweets urging black parents to tell their children how beautiful they are on a regular basis, specifically embracing their black physical features, Ari carried her thoughts over to Instagram live and got rather emotional during the frank conversation.
Some of Ari’s comments included this:
“I’m not with it, how people hate Black people so much. How Black people can sit up here and say, ‘It’s not my problem” or ‘She does look like a Rottweiler.’ That’s fine. And you want to talk about how people are so sensitive, they want to cancel freedom of speech. Why is that your speech? Why are you so comfortable tearing down Black women and no other race? Look around! When are Hispanic women ever compared to dogs? When do they do that? When do they do that to white women? When are white men do that to white women? When are Hispanic men doing that to Hispanic women? They’re not doing it. How come as a Black women, me sticking up for it, I’m Azealia?”
She followed those statements up with this:
“I made this live because I want people to know I really do love myself. I love my nose. I love Black features I want us to get to a point where we are becoming aware of the self-hate sometimes when you are referring to black women as a dog. Because we’re not doing this to other races. Or to races of women who have a nose like this.”
While there were many who sided with Ari’s statements, others commented that they believe she is being too sensitive because everyone is entitled to their own opinion and freedom of speech.
Roommates, what are your thoughts on this?
