Apple has reminded the world that if you’ve stolen a phone, it’s being tracked. According to CNN, the tech company sent pop up messages on stolen phones that read, “Please return to Apple Walnut Street,” a Philly location. The device has been disabled and is being tracked. Local authorities will be alerted.”
The messages started to appear on Twitter, during the global protests of George Floyd, a Black man who died in Minneapolis, while in police custody.. Unfortunately, while protesters took to the streets to demand justice, looters started to break into stores, including Apple, and stole merchandise.
On AppleInsider.com, it’s quite obvious the company has always had these measures in place. If you’re an Apple product junkie, you know this to be true.
“As part of its security policies, Apple uses special versions of its devices for its demonstration models, which are locked down to only work within the store, and cannot easily be made to work conventionally. This means the looting will be of very little benefit to those grabbing products from the desks.”
As we’ve kept y’all updated, there have been a plethora of protests since the death of George Floyd while he was in police custody. Though some of the protests have turned to looting and vandalizing, not all was lost as Derek Chauvin, the officer whose knee was on George’s neck, and the other three ex-officers have now all been charged.
It was announced Wednesday that Chauvin’s charge was upgraded from third-degree murder to now second-degree. The other officers have been charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder.
As we reported, additional footage of George Floyd’s death showed three officers pinning him down while he struggled to breathe. People felt that evidence alone warranted all officers involved being charged.Ultimately, it took a week for Chauvin’s charges to be upgraded and for the other ex-officers to receive charges, as well.
