While many of us grew up listening to Anita Baker, the legendary singer asked fans to stop streaming and buying her music.
While responding to a fan on Twitter, Baker said, “Hello Sweetheart
Thank You 4 Sending Me, Your Love. But, let’s not Advertise *Spotify Streaming, which is, a Publicly Traded Company, with a 50 Million$ Valuation… but doesnt pay Artists/Creators what their Worth.”
She also went on to say that she has outlived her artist contracts, but has yet to receive the masters that she alleges legally belong to her. “Miraculously… i have out-lived *ALL, of my Artists Contracts They no longer “Own,” my Name & Likeness. And, by Law…30 yr old Mstrs are 2b Returned, 2 Me.” Anita continued, “Unfortunately, They’re gonna make me Fight 4 it. I’m Prepared. 2 do that. Please Dont advertise/buy them. ABXO”
Anita also discussed how much money an artist makes. She tweeted,
”recordings Streamed & Sold are *Inferior & Missing Original Instrumentation. Recording Speeds have been ‘Sped Up’ Bootleg/Bogus ‘Vinyls’ R Not from Original Analog Mstrs. But, from Re-Processed (no Mid- Range frequencies) Digital Copies. Fans Deserve Better,” she said.
Anita ended her message with, ““Love, HugZ & Convo, Always Welcome on Our TL… I Am Just, No longer Free Advertising, for the [music] Th[ie]ves in The Temple,” she tweeted.
Anita also said, “If NOthing else comes of this, right Here?!#$% Ask Your Streaming Service, to help Artists Survive.”
One person tweeted, “Anita Baker’s request to not stream her music makes me think about how so much of our consumption of & access to art is digital now. We hardly possess physical copies anymore if the Internet overlords decided to pull the plug tomorrow.”
As you know Anita Baker retired in 2017 and held a farewell concert in 2018. She’s also the recipient of 8 Grammy Awards.
