Roommates, as some states move forward with plans to lower stay-at-home orders—that doesn’t mean that you can resume all of your pre-coronavirus activities…specifically going to the movies. AMC Theaters just announced that despite stay-at-home orders ending in select locations, the company will not be reopening theaters until the summer.
As reported by @HuffPost, AMC Theaters, the largest movie theater chain in the United States, is holding off on reopening until at least the summer—despite the fact that certain states are reopening following the coronavirus outbreak.
In a recent statement released, AMC explained its decision this way:
“As we plan our reopening, the health and safety of our guests and associates is our absolute highest priority. To be able to open, we also need a line of sight into a regular schedule of new theatrical blockbusters that get people truly excited about returning to their favorite movie theaters.”
AMC also said it expects that moviegoers could return “in the weeks ahead of new blockbusters” and in the meantime, the company is figuring out how to properly and safely do so “in an environment that’s safe and welcoming.” Coronavirus has made the idea of public events and large gatherings very tricky to navigate and ultimately unlikely for the foreseeable future.
You’ll recall that Hollywood studios and distributors have postponed nearly all of the movies that had been slated for release in the spring and early summer due to COVID-19. Additionally, even more studios decided to make some new releases available via Video On Demand or on streaming services—completely cutting out the traditional movie theater experience.
