Before Alicia Keys was a wife and mother, she was one of the most influential singers, musicians and song writers in the music industry! Alicia just released her new album, and in a recent interview, reveals that she had other plans for one of her hit songs.
While speaking with Stereogum, Alicia speaks about writing “Impossible” Christina Aguilera, and reveals that she actually wanted her to sing her own hit song, “If I Ain’t Got You”. Unfortunately, her A&R was not about to let her give up the song, and she recalls his hilarious response.
“He said, ‘Are you f*cking crazy? We’re not giving her that song. Are you out of your mind?'” Alicia says. “I was like, ‘Why not? I’ll write a hundred more of those, its fine. I think she should hear it. I don’t really think it’s a big deal.'”
Alicia says it was a special experience being able to work with Christina, regardless of if she gave her the song.
“I cut the vocals with her because I produced everything,” she says. “So it’s really important to be in the same space to just get all the energy. That was great. She sounded so good and she’s very special too.”
Alicia’s new album is a 15-track, features many artists, and speaks about love and growth within her life. While speaking about the first track on the album, Alicia explains how she writes songs as messages to herself.
“A lot of the times when I write songs, it’s because I need the message myself. with “Underdog,” I love the idea of defying offs. A lot of the times we’re thinking, “How can we get to the next place? How can I actually take my dreams and manifest them?” Sometimes that’s the hardest part, but if you keep going you’ll find that it’s going to happen for you.”
