Universal Pictures has obtained the rights to a number of songs from Prince’s catalog and is currently developing a new film inspired by his music. The studio plans to use the songs to drive a fictional narrative.
According to Variety, those connected to the project stress that the film is NOT a biopic, but an original film where Prince’s music will drive the plotline. Prince’s estate has been inquiring with different studios about a film. Donna Langley, the chairman of Universal worked hard to acquire the rights.
Sources say that Prince’s estate and Universal felt like his classic 1984 film “Purple Rain,” already served as a biopic. So this time around they wanted to do something that was both original and out of the box.
Meetings to find potential writers and producers have already begun. Executives are hoping to produce something similar to Universal’s “Mamma Mia.”
Troy Carter, the entertainment advisor of Prince’s estate will executive produce alongside Jody Gerson, the Chairman, and CEO of Universal Music Publishing Group, the exclusive worldwide publishing administrator for Prince’s catalog.
As we previously reported, a Prince documentary directed by Ava DuVernay is already in the works over at Netflix and is scheduled to release in 2019.
