#Roommates, let’s send our thoughts and prayers to the family of a 16-year-old #Michigan girl who passed away following a fight at her school.
The deadly assault happened Wednesday when the girl, identified as #DayonnaGibson in news reports, was stabbed twice in the chest by another teenage girl during a fight that was apparently over a boy at a suburban #Detroit high school, the @AP reports.
Warren Police Commissioner #William Dwyer said the deadly fight was between two “straight-A students” in a #Fitzgerald High School classroom that morning. The 17-year-old suspect used a steak knife in the attack, according to Dwyer.
A school resource officer immediately began life-saving procedures, but Dayonna was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead about an hour later.
“This is truly a tragedy. This appears to be an altercation between two students and we’re investigating to determine why this occurred,” Dwyer said.
The girls knew each other and had no history of trouble, according to Dwyer. He suggested the fight was over a male student who he says is cooperating with the investigation.
The suspect was taken into custody at the scene, and authorities will seek a murder charge for her, according to Dwyer.
Dayonna had a well-rounded academic and social life. She was on the school robotics team, student council, ran cross country and played in the marching band, Dwyer said.
The school was initially placed on lockdown due to the fight but students were eventually released. The district said in a statement that the high school will remain closed today, but that students and their parents can come during normal school hours for support and assistance from counselors, psychologists and social workers.
School officials say they are working with authorities and conducting an internal review that includes safety procedures.
We’ll keep you updated on the latest, #Roommates.
