Last week Uber announced a temporary fuel surcharge to help out drivers and couriers as gas prices continue to increase. After the company announced the decision, many customers expressed their interest in taking their business over to other ridesharing apps such as Lyft. Now Lyft has joined Uber by placing the temporary surcharge on their rides.
According to CNBC, Lyft announced its decision this week, stating that the fees will go to drivers who are left with spending extra while filling their gas tanks as gas prices continue to skyrocket. They did not provide details on the increased amount expected to be added to rides.
KTLA reports that senior communications manager CJ Macklin said, “Driver earnings overall remain elevated compared to last year, but given the rapid rise in gas prices we’ll be asking riders to pay a temporary fuel surcharge, all of which will go to drivers.”
Macklin added, details about how much Lyft plans on charging customers is expected to be announced soon. The company shared that they will be “closely monitoring both the soaring cost of fuel and its impact on drivers in recent days.”
As previously reported, last week Uber announced that they will add between $0.45 or $0.55 per ride and between $0.35 or $0.45 per delivery for the next 60 days, as they look to help the drivers with their ridesharing app and also their delivery app. The additional charges will be based on the length of the trip, and also the price of gas in whichever market the trip is taking place.
The U.S. has banned the imports of Russian oil and gas, as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
On Wednesday, President Biden tweeted that oil prices are decreasing, with hopes that gas prices should decrease too.
Oil prices are decreasing, gas prices should too.
Last time oil was $96 a barrel, gas was $3.62 a gallon. Now it’s $4.31.
