It’s about time! When it comes to the story of the late revolutionary Afeni Shakur, get ready because it’s coming in a significant way! The mother of rap legend Tupac Shakur and prominent member of the Black Panther party story is finally about to be shared on film! According to Variety, there is a biopic that is in the works!
The film “Peace, Love & Respect; the Afeni Shakur/Panther 21 story” has actress, director, and writer, Jasmine Guy on board as executive producer. Jasmine won’t be working alone to bring Afeni’s story to life. She will be working alongside writer/director Jamal Joseph, who was arrested as one of the “Panther 21” with Afeni. The film also has backing from Amaru Entertainment and the Shakur Estate, which is very important!
Dina LaPolt, who worked with the estate for many years, is also listed as a producer. Dina worked tirelessly with Afeni to settle Tupac’s estate and was vital in helping the late rapper release nine posthumous albums, books, and a documentary. Dina says the story is close to her heart, as Afeni was a hero to her activist mother. “My mother was very much a part of the civil rights movement — she taught me about Afeni and how she was arrested as a member of the ‘Panther 21.'”
“Peace, Love & Respect, the Afeni Shakur/Panther 21 story” will keep viewers entertained as it will span a pivotal two-year period. From April 2, 1969, the biopic will focus on Afeni at the age of 20, when she and other Black Panther members were arrested and charged with conspiracy to bomb police stations in New York, through June 16, 1971. The day is significant because it’s the day of Tupac’s birth. During the trial, Afeni represented herself and was acquitted of all charges.
Outside of the arrest with the Panthers, the biopic will also flashback to Afeni’s childhood and teenage years. Reports don’t state which actress will play the role of the activist and the date of the biopic’s release isn’t available. Roommates, are yall excited?
