As previously reported, Nellie’s Sports Bar in Washington, D.C. recently issued a statement regarding the viral video involving a woman named Keisha Young. Bar security was captured dragging Keisha down the bar’s stairs by her braids over the weekend. The establishment released a statement on Sunday saying they’ll be launching a “full investigation” after being “incredibly upset and disturbed” by the footage. Well, it seems like Nellie’s is moving swiftly with their investigation. By Monday afternoon, they released an additional statement saying they’ve terminated their independent security vendor.
“Our investigation into the matter is ongoing, and we will cooperate with any law enforcement investigation, however we do not need to wait for the investigation’s conclusion before we take decisive action,” Nellie’s wrote in the caption of an Instagram post.
The restaurant continued on to issue a “heartfelt apology” to everyone who witnessed the incident. However, they failed to mention or offer Keisha any direct apologies in the two paragraphs written.
Following the incident, protests broke out in front of the establishment. At a protest, 22-year-old Keisha spoke to WUSA9. She explained that secuirty allegedly confused her with someone else, while seeking a patron who allegedly attempted to bring a liquor bottle into the bar.
“Somehow I got mixed up in the altercation because I looked like somebody else and I got hit and dragged down the steps.” Keisha said on-camera. “I didn’t do nothing wrong and that’s all I remember…first walking up the steps and getting dragged right back down.”
Keisha also explained that seeing the video of herself being dragged was “a little bit much.” In response to the incident, she’d like Nellie’s “gone.”
Although Nellie’s remains in business, the restaurant will be closed for the remainder of the week. During the time, they plan to “evaluate this regrettable situation.”
“In the interim, we will use this time to listen and understand what more we can do to create the safe and friendly atmosphere our guests have come to expect from Nellie’s Sports Bar over the past 14 years,” Nellie’s said.
